Health and Safety Report

The following outlines some of the health and safety issues of which all students should be aware, regarding their rights and obligations, as well as the obligation of ASCA and Saint Mary's University.

Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault

Sexual harassment is defined as unwanted or unsolicited sexual attention of a persistent or abusive nature, made by a person who knows or ought reasonably to know that such attention is unwanted.

Sexual assault is any form of sexual contact or activity that occurs without your consent; it is not limited to rape. It can include fondling, kissing groping, molesting, grabbing, being forced to touch someone, as well as intercourse, without your consent. It happens to both men and women.

If you feel you have been sexually harassed or assaulted during summer school, please contact ASCA or the Saint Mary's conference staff. Saint Mary's University has a formal procedure for dealing with such complaints and has a sexual harassment advisor on campus (Jo Stern - 420-5113). Every effort will be made to protect the privacy of all individuals involved in the case, whether formal or informal.

Student Responsibilities

Students should display courtesy, consideration and respect for the rights of others. They are expected to maintain a standard of behavior which reflects membership of the CA student community, as defined by their provincial institute by-laws.

Each student should accept responsibility for the care and proper use of all university property and should also respect the personal property and rights of other students.

Students are responsible for their overnight guests and visitors. This means that students will be held accountable for misconduct or damages caused by their overnight guests and visitors. All guests and visitors must comply with university and residence policies and procedures.

Residence Alcohol Policy

The term "alcohol" will be used to describe all beverages which contain alcohol. "Open Alcohol" is any alcoholic beverage not sealed in its closed original container, i.e. a sealed beer bottle.

Open alcohol may be transported through floor common hallways from room to room and from lounge to room or vise versa providing that individuals not consume alcohol while in the floor common hallways. Open alcohol is not permitted to leave the floor by any means and is prohibited in elevators, elevator lobbies and stairwells. All open alcohol must be transported in a non-glass personalized container. Students may consume alcohol in their rooms and in floor common lounges.

Drug Enforcement - "Zero Tolerance"

Possession and/or trafficking in illicit drugs is a criminal offence and will not be tolerated in the university. Where drug use is suspected and is in progress:

Room Entry Policy

As a representative of the University, a university staff member may enter a student's room/apartment under the following circumstances:

Smoking Policy

Saint Mary's University is almost an entirely smoke-free environment.

In residence, the university has designated certain floors non-smoking and have met requests for housing on these floors wherever possible. The non-smoking policy extends to common areas and private rooms on these floors.

What to do in Case of Fire

In case of fire in your apartment/room:

  1. close the door of the room the fire is in
  2. leave the apartment/room
  3. close the door between the apartment/room and the corridor
  4. sound the nearest internal fire alarm
  5. evacuate

If you discover a fire anywhere in the building:

  1. ring the nearest internal fire alarm
  2. alert everyone in the area
  3. evacuate

Remember:

You are in a fire-resistant building. If the corridor is filled with smoke, you are safer to remain in your apartment/room. Use your telephone to call the fire department (dial 911)

When you leave the floor:

  1. Use the stair tower, it is fire safe.
  2. Do not use the elevator.
  3. Remember the fire department number - 911.

Your building fire alarm is connected directly to the fire department. They will receive the call of the fire as soon as you pull the internal fire alarm box.

Security

The residence department has a security force staffed by student security officers and a full time live-in administrator. Students share in the responsibility for the security of the residences, the people living in them and their personal belongings.

The best defense against property loss is to keep your door locked at all times. Valuables should not be left in your room. You should ensure you have adequate insurance coverage on any valuables you take to summer school.

Upon arrival in residence, each student is issued a security key to the main door of his/her residence and a room key. Suite keys are also used in Loyola and Vanier Residences. The student should take special care not to lose his/her keys and should never lend them to another person.

You are responsible for using good judgement, in particular against unforseen events. For example, travel in pairs or groups when walking at night and, if walking alone, particularly late at night, call the Huskie Patrol for Accompaniment.

Meals

If you have any special dietary needs for health or lifestyle reasons, you should notify the Saint Mary's cafeteria staff before you arrive at summer school.

Counselling

We have contracted with Saint Mary’s University to provide emergency counselling to ASCA students on an individual basis while they are at summer school. The counselling office is located on the 4th floor of the Student Union Building and the phone number is 420-5615. The office is open from 9 am to noon and 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. All sessions are confidential and ASCA would not have access to any information concerning the services the counselling office provides to students.
